Blogging vs. Social Media – Which is best?

With limited time to work on your business, you need to be hyper focused on what’s more important for your business. While every teacher business will read this blog post and digest it as it relates to them, I thought it would be best to hash it out in Blogging vs. Social Media – Which is best for your business? This blog post will list the pros and cons of each.

Why does my teacher business need a website?

Searchable by Google

Google ranks blog posts higher when they notice the website is being updated routinely. Google’s algorithm loves new content so when indexed, they will rank you higher. By posting consistent content, you will rank higher than someone posting once a month and ghosting their platform.

Blogging Tells a complete story

Blogging content can be longer than a social media post, so you’re able to tell the full story in one swoop. If you want teachers to use the idea you are sharing, you need to explain thoroughly. A social media post struggles to achieve this.

Longer lasting content

Blogging creates longer lasting content that will provide value even years later. Due to the social media feeds and the algorithm, it’s highly unlikely that a new teacher will scroll back 4 years ago to an idea you posted about (even if it’s still relevant today).

A website establishes credibility

Showcase your expertise with your website so that teachers know they can trust you. If you are serving your audience with valuable information, they will keep coming back for more.

Cons to having a website

A blog needs an audience to be successful. Therefore, you need to start using strategies like Pinterest Marketing, or cross promoting through your other channels to get it off the ground.

A blog can be expensive. If you are unfamiliar with WordPress, you might outsource a lot of the lifting. This can cost you. There are so many YouTube videos out there but you need to weigh what is the best use of your time.

Blogs are not discoverable on social media. A social media platform has their own algorithm that pushes that content to their feeds. Blogs rely on their own streams.

Why does my teacher business need social media?

Easier to produce content

For some, social media can be an easier way to produce content whereas a blog post might take time to research, write, and get it tidied up for SEO. You can batch create small bites of content to share consistently for long periods of time.

Easier for teachers to consume

Short form media is all over the internet and the engagement and amount of content a teacher will consume is faster than the one blog they will read.

Easier to plug into the teacher community

Being a part of social media for your business puts the social back in social media. Make connections with those that bring you joy and you’ll have a creative partner to root for and bounce ideas back and forth from. Making connections with the #Teachergram is one of the reasons I’m still blogging today!

Cons to only having social media

Social media moves quickly. You might have the best idea/post, but the quick movement of social media and fast attention spans won’t always give you as much love. Since it moves so quickly, the conversion rate from post to sales is more difficult.

You do not own platform. How will you reach your audience if something happens where your account is hacked or locked? This is why it is so important to have an email list and a website. You can control the content distribution and cannot on social media.

Struggle for search engines to index social media posts. You will get more SEO love on a website since it is easier to index.

You have to be consistent to be seen. Social media does not favor the random posters. Create a strategy to help you stay focused. This will ensure you get seen in front of others.

Blogging vs. Social Media – Which is best for your business?

In order to thrive and take your business to the next level, you should have both. This will allow you to drive awareness of products and servies through social media, but also convert them into paying customers through your blog. Truncate the long form blog content to your social media posts by simply repurposing your content.

By combining blogging and social media, you can expand your audience. Good luck and happy marketing!
