I am going to be complete honest and share that I had NO IDEA that the Iditarod race was before I found this book. Akiak by Robert Blake is a wonderful book about perseverance.
An old but strong dog, Akiak enters her last Iditarod race with the hopes of winning. Akiak hurts herself along the way and she doesn’t take getting dropped from the race lightly. She catches up to her team with high hopes that they will win.
This is a great book to share with our kids that we must push ourselves to persevere, even when the odds are not in our favor.
I am going to review {story elements} and {summary}.
We are going to discuss Akiak’s {character traits}, as well as learn important Mushing Vocabulary!
Since Akiak tried his hardest and did not give up, my kids will be writing about a time they tried their hardest. They are going to use a planning sheet that I have included in this pack.
I am going to give them a reading comprehension quiz using these task cards below!
I am SO STINKIN EXCITED about the second activity!
I love doing {web quests} in my classroom. It is such a fabulous way to research.
My kids are going to learn about the Iditarod and record their information.
The kids can use the booklet provides OR create Vidras.

When it is time for the Iditarod race, I am going to assign each kids a musher. They are going to keep track and log their musher’s progress. They will learn all about their musher AND write them a letter!

I love doing this with my GT kiddos but I'm usually just pulling from here and there this is perfect! Thanks for sharing.
