Books Teachers Love is a collaborative link up where twelve teachers share their favorite read alouds for the following month! This blog posts will focus on October, Halloween, and fall themed books. In my opinion, I have the perfect book that will tug at the boys and girls in your classroom.
The book that I am sharing for you (Miss Mary Reporting) is about the ever so famous Mary Garber. Do you not know who she is? That’s okay, I totally didn’t either until I saw this book! ha! Mary Garber was a pioneer for females in sports journalism. This literary nonfiction book details her life from her love of sports (& playing quarterback) as a child, to her growing up and dealing with condescendence from male sports writers as she stuck to dream. Get the book (HERE).
This books is outside the realm of a typical “fall theme book”, but with football season in the fall, I feel this is the prefect time to shed light to the other side of sports.
The kids will read more about Mary Barber and work on their comprehension skills.
I love tying writing into my reading lessons. With every books that we read, we discuss the (theme) of the book. We place the them on our (theme board) and describe the main character’s trait’s. To read more about how I use my free theme board, {CLICK HERE}. If you would like more information about how I teach character traits, {click here}.
With literary nonfiction, the kids can summarize the books like a fiction story. I want the kids to practice this standard with this genre of text. Here is a {free} graphic organizer that you can use for this story. If you would like to read more about how I teach summary, and read about free lesson ideas, {click here}.
One of my FAVORITE components of this unit is tying in current events and projects. Since Mary Garber was famous for her sports journalism,
I want to turn my kids into sports journalists!
The kids wills can one of the three QR codes and pick a kid-friendly sporting article. You can incorporate this into a center, morning work, or free time. The kids will use the graphic organizer to plan their own newscast. They will create interview questions to interview a person for their story, and then create a video to present! If you do not have the technology resources, they can present it to the class love!
I will set up a part of the room (just two desks and chairs nothing too fancy) with a sign. The kids will use these microphones that I found on Amazon to report. How stinkin’ cute?!
