Nearpod in the virtual classroom for distance learning

Navigating new teaching formats can be overwhelming. The world is playing hot potato with what teachers should do. Whether you’re asked to teach in a virtual classroom, hybrid teaching mode, or in the classroom experience, Nearpod can flex for all three!

Nearpod in the Virtual Classroom

The video below is jam packed with the many ways that Nearpod can support a virtual classroom, from making connections with students, adapting pre-created resources, empowering with student choice and voice, all the way to applying an empathetic lens. Click the video below for tons of videos.

For those that prefer to read, I’ve added from the video, below!

Different way to launch Nearpod Lessons

Nearpod has three modes when teaching:

Live Lesson: Teacher controls the flow of the lesson and all devices are synchronized. This is great if you’re teaching in the moment with Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meets, etc! All student will log onto their device and they will see what the teacher is showing on their screen. You can also view real time progress as you teach!

Student-Paced:

In a student paced mode, students control the flow of the lesson and moves the lesson along at their own pace. This increases flexibility for teachers as well as parents, because they can help their child when it’s most convenient for everyone. You can use student paced for:

  • Independent work
  • Review
  • Homework, etc!
  • Centers (different codes for the different types of center activities)
  • Flipped classroom (one class working on student paced codes and the other half is in a live lesson)

Extending Student Paced Codes & Require Student Submissions

When giving independent work, you can require student submissions so that student don’t just click through the lesson but are required to answer. You can also extend the time frame of a student paced code so that the lesson is active for an extended period of time. Slide the image below to see the options!

Front of Class Mode

In front of class mode, you can project your video even when students aren’t joining from their device!

Encourage Community Discussions

Collaborate Boards for Community Discussions

Use Nearpod’s Collaborate board to encourage community discussions! This is essentially a digital parking lot where students can post images, texts, and gives in real time and everyone will see responses. Don’t worry, you can also hide student names if you want to keep the anonymity! There is also an option to require approval before submission.

Add Virtual Reality to create shared experiences

Nearpod has over 300,000 virtual reality experiences that you can add into your own lessons or edit into a Nearpod pre-made lessons. Create shared experiences while your students are spread out. This is great for empathy building and also provides scheme for those that don’t have that to pull from. Create equal access to opportunities and experiences with VR!

    Dear Ms. Amber Calderon,
That video about Nearpod was amazing! I am a veteran teacher (20th year this school year), but I do not claim to know anything about Nearpod, believe me! However, I love all of the ways I will be able to use it to enhance my lessons. I just starting using Microsoft Teams last year as I now teach middle school instead of elementary school, and I am still learning about Microsoft Teams. I actually just found out about Nearpod this week when I went back to my building for pre-planning week (our students will start the year online). Of course I want them to have the best virtual learning experience ever. Nearpod seems to be a wonderful answer to all things virtual. So, I know that your experience was in elementary, but I teach 6th grade ELA which is not too much different from 5th grade in all essence of standards being taught. I may need to reach out to you for suggestions with some topics I will be covering this year. However, I plan to really study this Nearpod application and see what all I may be able to accomplish on my own. Thank you for having this channel, and I will definitely subscribe to it and ask my team to do the same.

    Thank you again!
