My book is called, {Chocolate Milk, Por Favor!}. The story is about Johnny who loves school but that quickly changes when a new kid arrives. Gabe enrolls in school and everyone learns that he doesn’t speak any English. You would think that this situation would spur the children to be kind, but Johnny goes out of his way to be unfriendly towards him. In the midst of Johnny’s rudeness, he noticed that Gabe begins to make friends with his friends. As Johnny battles whether to continue with his attitude or see the light, he comes to the realization that differences should be celebrated.

The author, Maria Dismondy, used her personal classroom experiences of an actual child in her classroom with this similar experience.

What a powerful story for the beginning of the year!

A new student walks in and you hope and pray that your kids have remember everything you have taught them about being kind and that it transfers into their interactions with this new student. Instead of hoping, I feel like we should explicitly teach and have conversations with the kids regarding new student interaction. This book is the perfect conversation starter for just that. In addition, we can tie the book into our classroom community by sharing each other’s differences and celebrating them.

After we read the {the book} we will put ourselves in Gabe’s shoes. How would we want our classmates to act? What specific actions could we take to ensure that our new student is as comfortable as possible? As we discuss these ideas, we will anchor our favorite ones on the template above.

I’m always looking for new books that have similar messages to some of my other read alouds and this one might become my new favorite! We typically get a handful of new students who come and go during the school year, so we have lots of chances to practice this. I’ve never heard of this title before so I am glad to check it out and hopefully add it to my back to school read aloud list. Since our student population is pretty diverse, students will be able to relate to this I’m sure. Thank you for your awesome resources as well!
