Hey friends!
My mind is BLOWN with the fact that today, I took down my January calendar and put up FEBRUARY! I think my nostrils are beginning to smell saltwater 😉
Back to reality!
This past week reviewed summary in fiction stories. I don’t know about you, but my kids pretty much thought summary was sequencing every event in the story and then just picking an answer choice based on luck.
I am a list person that loves to color code, so why couldn’t I bring that into my classroom?
First, we reviewed how to summarize using our two methods.
This REALLY helped my kids that needed a distinct break between the story elements. We also had wonderful conversations as to why a specific action belonged in the climax Post-It note.
To keep the kids accountable, I had them staple their post it notes to the passage so I could make sure they were making the connection between the organizer and the written summary.
I also showed the kids that if they folded a piece of paper into fourths, they could complete the same concept of the Post-It notes at home or during a test.
I also posted a multiple choice summary question to EDMODO so I could easily assess which kids got it and which kids needed more help.
Click the picture below to see what I just sent home with my parents in my weekly newsletter so my parents can UNDERSTAND how we summarize in class and how they can integrate the activities at home!
