When papers are getting passed out, when it’s carpet time, and when we line up are all opportunities for kids to go off on a tangent talking and then you waste time bringing kids back to reality.

A song that we sing when papers are getting passed out is:

The first thing I do is always the same
I pick up my paper and write my name
(x2)
Ms. ________ needs to know, who did the work and so
The first thing I do is always the same
I pick up my paper and write my name

YES. I said it and I don’t care what anyone says. I refuse to grade on the weekends. I actually have not graded over the weekend in two years and I intend to keep that tradition going. Let’s be realistic anyways, my bag of papers to grade just goes on a little field trip. From the school, to the car, and back to the school without ever entering my house. ha!
By immediately grading, I have been able to quickly see which children need re-teaching so I can make sure they have mastered the standard.

For the most part, we strategically pair students together based on their strengths and weaknesses. However, sometimes we are doing an activity that doesn’t need that much structure.
I use the partner pairing cards to quickly group kids. The kids can’t complain because they drew the card! ha!

Y’all! I am going to be honest. I do NOT come up with my writing plans. Seriously, I don’t. I am not that great of a writing teacher and I Googled my little heart our but nothing came close than to Jen Bengal’s writing units. So guess what, I bit the bullet and bought it.

That money was well spent because I saved TIME by not having to create it, and was able to attend that happy hour (#realtalk) ha

Pass out papers? Take lunch count? Remind kids to keep their desk clean?
These are just a few of the many tasks that I delegate to my kids. I firmly believe that if I train them, and give them a sense of ownership in the classroom, they will lead in their job and help us all be more productive. This gives me more time to TEACH!

I know what you’re thinking. Ain’t NOBODY got time for that! Okay so the foldables with all the little pieces, I agree with you. I’m not doing that. However the bigger pieces? Save yourself the headache by doing that for them. When I am making copies, I just take those out of the stack while the rest of my papers are going through the machine. I use a big paper cutter and snip snip.

I am sure that you have pages and pages of task cards in your TPT Purchases tab. With so many task cards, it can be easy to forget that you even have what you are strolling through TPT to purchase. I organized all of my task cards using dollar bin tubs (see image below), and slapped on an label to tell me what is inside. This is great when I am planning for the following week. I can pull out the tub to sift though and voila! math centers are planned!

As you read the heading for this section you may be thinking, “how on earth does leaving my classroom help me better prepare for the next day”?
It’s easy to fall into the trap of overdoing it. I am sure you are ambitious, but don’t forget the ultimate refueling principal. You get more done when you step back and recharge the brain and body. When you are constantly draining yourself, you are not being as product as you can be. With the teacher burnout statistic as high as it is, we need amazing teachers like you in this profession. Don’t get overwhelmed and tired.
One of my personal favorite ways to do this is to work out. I work out at Camp Gladiator. Every Sunday, I create my workout schedule and stick to it. By doing this, I am forcing myself to leave work and dedicate time for myself. This makes me feel like I have a life other than teaching, which in turns helps me mitigate any burnout feelings.
I hope this was a Peppy Zesty idea for you!
