Promoting Campus Wide Kindness

Keep reading to snag an idea that my campus does to promote kindness all year round!

These ideas can be implemented campus wide, grade wide, or just your tiny noon in that big building.

It is so important that not only teachers, but students recognize and praise kindness that they see happening around them. When one person is kind, it starts a chain reaction.

Let’s start with kindness links:

  • Purchase giant stacks of colored card stock
  • Cut the card stock into strips (this is a great activity to ask your paras to support!)
  • Place the strips in the teacher work room to grab as y’all need

Where to house the links:

  •  Keep these links in two baskets (like these)
  • Use one basket to house blank links, and the other basket to place links kids have filled out

Why two baskets:

  • If the link is about a student in the class the kid that wrote the link places it on their desk so that person can read and feel all warm and fuzzy!
  • If a student wrote a link about a student in another class, I let the kids place the link in the teacher of that student’s box outside the classroom.

Assign a Classroom Ambassador:

If your entire school is participating, assign each classroom has a ‘Kindness Ambassador’.

These kids have monthly meetings (with the other kindness ambassadors in the school) to help brainstorm ways to help spread kindness on campus!

My favorite job of theirs is that the ambassadors count the kindness links and staple them into chains.

Once every few weeks I have the kindness ambassador count the links and staple, they I will quickly add the chains outside our classroom.

If you want to to proudly display your link count,

Theme kindness challenges by month

Our campus also has monthly kindness challenges to remind students to write links!

This past month was, “Can You Build a Snowman with Kindness?”  Every teacher started with a blank snowman silhouette.  Each piece of the snowman was worth 50 links.  We would celebrate 50 links and then the kindness ambassador would tape the piece of the snowman up as we were walking to PE.

It was a great way to highlight the positive acts were happening!

February Challenge Example:

Each teacher is assigned a heart that is hanging outside the main hallway.

Each piece of the hear is worth 15 kindness links. We are counting kindness links for the month of February only.

Could you adapt this to fit the needs of your school?

I hope this was a Peppy Zesty idea for you!

I LOVE this idea but I teach Kindergarten and most of my students can't write down the act of kindness. I don't have the time to write them down for the kids either. Any ideas about how this can work for Kindergarten???

What a wonderful idea! I love how your school is integrating kindness into everyday life and empowering students to take control of their school environment. Such a fun and clever way to build a habit of kindness=) For students who can’t write yet, could they draw pictures of the acts of kindness?
