Books Teachers Love: October Books

Hello, Friends!

It’s the 10th which means a bunch of teachers are sharing their favorite read alouds for the following month. I love this link up so much because I am constantly finding new books to read to my class!

The book I will be reading to my class is
The story is about a young boy named Ethan whose monster (Gabe) that typically resides under his bed goes fishing. Ethan needs Gabe’s familiar nightly scares to go to sleep, so he interviews potential substitutes to see if they’ve got the equipment for the job—pointy teeth, sharp claws, and a long tail. However, none of them proves scary enough for Ethan.
This is a great monster under the bed story with the perfect balance of giggles and shivers!
I love how much this book glorifies a child’s imagination!
I use this book for Writer’s Workshop.
After reading the book, I ask my kids if they could picture any of the monsters in their head while I was reading it.
We then discuss how as writers, we must paint a vivid picture to create these images in our reader’s heads. Our goal is to create a monster : however scary, silly, or pretty, and use as many descriptive words to describe our wanted monster.
We will be “hiring” a monster just like Ethan, to live under our bed!
Once we have this discussion, we brainstorm the types of descriptive words we could use in our writing. I do one type with the kids, then the kids work in groups to come up with more and we offer a time to share.
Once whole group is finished, the kids begin building their monster of choice.
They plan on the given graphic organizer then write their piece when competed!
If time permits, I will have the kids trade papers and they will draw their partners monster based on what they read!
